Dr Jules Latham

Chair of our Forest Scientific Committee Panel

Julia is a conservation scientist with over 15 years of experience in biodiversity monitoring, sustainable natural resource management and project and programme evaluation. She is particularly interested in social-ecological systems and the complex linkages between people and nature, with a focus on biodiversity and ecosystems, livelihoods and climate resilience.


Julia holds a PhD in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management from the University of York in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute. For her doctoral research Julia worked closely with multiple forest stakeholders in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania, where she examined the social and economic trade-offs associated with the protection of forests. Julia has collaborated with organisations like Conservation International, the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and the Zoological Society of London. She has provided her expertise to a variety of clients, including DEFRA, Blue Ventures Conservation, National Geographic, and the World Bank Forest Carbon Partnership Fund.


Her work includes project and programme design, monitoring, evaluation & learning (MEL), applied research, data analysis, communication and training. Julia is dedicated to promoting sustainable and equitable conservation and development around the world.
